History of Herbert L. Jamison

A Brief History of the Origins and Growth of Herbert L. Jamison & Co., L.L.C.

 
1898 Mr. Richard L. "Captain" Roberts entered the insurance brokerage business in a small office at 1 Liberty Street, New York City, specializing in Marine Insurance.
   
1916 The firm of Richard L. Roberts, Inc. was incorporated by Mr. Roberts and Ralph Lewis at 100 William Street, New York City.
Herbert L. Jamison, Sr. joined Richard L. Roberts, Inc. at that time after 5 years as underwriter with Crum and Forster in New York City.
   
1928 Mr. Roberts retired and Herbert L. Jamison, Sr. became President and Treasurer of Richard L. Roberts, Inc.
   
1935 Richard L. Roberts, Inc. was merged with Frank & DuBois, a well established NYC Brokerage firm, and Herbert L. Jamison, Sr. became a general partner of Frank & DuBois.
   
1938 Herbert L. Jamison, Sr. withdrew from Frank & DuBois and established Herbert L. Jamison & Co. as a partnership, taking with him most of the original R.L. Roberts staff and accounts. His two Partners were Mr. Peter Kes and Mr. Gustav Kashel.
   
1939 Offices were moved from 100 William Street to 111 Fulton Street, a new building which was Aetna's New York headquarters.
   
1948 A small branch office was opened at 55 William Street as the firm's growth required more space.
   
1950 Messrs. Kes and Kashel withdrew from Herbert L. Jamison & Co. to form their own firm. Herbert L. Jamison, Jr. became a Partner and continued the present firm with Herbert L. Jamison, Sr.
   
1953 Offices were moved to 270 Madison Avenue as we became one of the first general brokers to move "Up-Town".
   
1960 Herbert L. Jamison, Jr. became Managing Partner.
   
1962 William A. McManus III became a General Partner of the firm.
   
1964 Arthur M. Van De Water merged his firm, Van De Water & Gray of 80 Pine Street, New York City, into HLJ&Co. and Mr. Van De Water became a General Partner of the firm.
   
1965 Offices moved to 90 Park Avenue as growth continued. Herbert L. Jamison, Sr. retired from active participation in the firm.
   
1969 Charles G. Weaver merged his firm, Knox, Weaver & Co. of 103 Park Avenue into HLJ&Co. Mr. Weaver became a General Partner in the firm and his associates, Mr. Reginal Knox and Mr. Arthur Knox, Jr., became office brokers of HLJ&Co.
   
1972 Mr. Richard Vilas and Mr. Charles W. Tucker, Jr. became associated with HLJ&Co. as office brokers.
   
1974 Partington, Kobbe Company, Inc. merged into the firm.
   
1979 A branch office was established at 80 Main Street in West Orange, New Jersey, to handle the rapidly expanding professional liability business. This office was moved to still larger facilities at Executive Drive in 1985.
   
1981 John Scranton and Jesse Watkins became General Partners of the firm.
 
1982 Herbert L. Jamison, Jr. became Senior Partner and William A. McManus III became Managing Partner.
   
1984 Moved New York headquarters to 345 Park Avenue South.
   
1985 Moved the New Jersey Branch office to expanded facilities at 300 Executive Drive, West Orange, NJ.
   
1986 H.L. Jamison Excess Company formed. Frank Bolen became a General Partner in the firm.
   
1988 The firm of Herbert L. Jamison & Co. will celebrate its 50th Anniversary.
   
1989 H.L. Jamison Excess Company, Inc. changed its name to Jamison Special Risk, Inc.
   
1991 John McDonald and Sean Pattwell Became General Partners of the firm.
   
1992 Herbert L. Jamison & Co., and Jamison Special Risk, Inc. consolidate their headquarters offices to 100 Executive Drive.
   
1994 Herbert L. Jamison & Co., chose to become a limited liability company and changed its name to Herbert L. Jamison & Co., L.L.C., and re-located their New York City office downtown at 17 State Street.
   
1995 Herbert L. Jamison & Co.,L.L.C. becomes the the U.S. member of the International Brokers Association (IBA) at a meeting in Prague.
   
1997 Herbert L. Jamison & Co., L.L.C. becomes a founding member of Risk Pro Net.
   
2000 Debbie Baldwin, Joseph Bieniowski, Anthony Greene and John O’Brien become Directors of the firm.
   
2001 RDT Agency joins Jamison.
   
2003 Formation of ProAccess, a single member LLC, owned by the partners of Jamison. ProAccess is an MGA/Wholesaler specializing in professional liability for Lawyers, Accountants and Healthcare.
   
2005 Chamber Insurance is formed as a wholesaler specializing in environmental and Workers Compensation risks.
   
2004 Roger Testa is named a Managing Director.
   
2008 Policy Managers and Southeast Insurance Associates in Cocoa, Florida join Jamison.
   
2009 Gene Bebout is named as Director.
